Every December, the installation of our Christmas tree necessitates various items of furniture being brought up from the sitting room to my study. This has a knock-on effect of forcing me to shift around the many piles of books and papers that clutter the floor. And this in turn led to me stumbling upon this old photo, taken on a research trip to Gibraltar a good decade ago when I was first developing the idea of a book about a lawyer from Gibraltar. I remember precisely why I was drawn to the name ‘Sanguinetti’ — that hint of bloodiness, the Italian origin, the lyrical rhythm. But James the French polisher became Spike the advocate… and the rest etc etc.
The shopfront is on Main Street, if memory serves, and the next time I visit the Rock, I fully intend to search it out again…
