I’ve always been an eager entrant of short story competitions, even though it took many years before I ever troubled the judges (the first breakthrough was getting onto the shortlist for the ‘Highlands and Islands’ competition back in 2009 — I cast the net widely, you see). Even if you don’t win, I’ve always thought, you experience the discipline of writing the story (a tough genre to get right), and the more competitions you enter, the better you get, and the larger your collection grows. Anyway, all this adds to the honour of being asked to judge this year’s Thame Literary Festival shory story competition. The deadline is 14th Sept, the theme ‘Family’, the maximum length 2000 words, and I promise to be a sympathetic reader… Oh, and the prize is £100 of book tokens for the excellent Book House shop in Thame. As well as eternal glory. £5 an entry — http://www.talfestival.org/page16.html
