It was a curious experience to be in Gibraltar for their inaugural literary festival. On the one hand, it was fantastic to see the Rock put on show — buffed up like a gem — for people to appreciate that there was a great deal more to the place than border queues, apes and military might. On the other, I am more used to walking round Gibraltar incognito, as a hidden writer amongst the thousands of people going about their daily business, so experiencing the streets packed out with other writers (many of them huge names) was a tad disconcerting, like your favourite bar or restaurant suddenly being overrun — you’re pleased for the owners, yet somehow uneasy. Anyway, that was just my weirdness — the festival was brilliantly run, and hopefully the audience enjoyed it as much as the participants. Here is a picture of me with fellow crime writers Jason Webster and Robert Daws, sitting after our event in the Garrison Library (a location which features, incidentally, in Spike Book 3). Just out of shot is our questioner-in-chief, David Freeman, whose world-class amiability made the talk a winner…
