Well, the deadline has passed, and we have ourselves a winner. As a reminder, the brief was as follows –
‘In ‘Shadow of the Rock’, Spike Sanguinetti leaves Gibraltar to go to Morocco. In ‘Sign of the Cross’ he goes to Malta. Write up to 100 words on where in the Mediterranean he should go for a future adventure. ‘
The entries were superb and varied – a great many people clearly have a favourite corner of the Mediterranean. I was drawn to Andreas Shaw’s entry –
‘Spike goes to Argentina, and gets mixed up with the fast-living international polo set. Whilst there he meets the mysterious Rachel, who may or may not be an Israeli secret agent on the trail of the last living Nazi war criminal in South America. ‘
But alas, unless there has been a catastrophic meteorite strike that I missed, Argentina is not yet a Mediterranean country. Shame, as I loved the content. In the end, it came down to two entries, Sicily vs. Cyprus. The Sicilian entry from Stephanie Carpenter was brief, yet charged with potential atmosphere —
‘Spike travels to Sicily, on the trail of a mafia kingpin who has threatened to expose a dark secret in his past…’
Recent events, however, have elevated the Cyprus so much to the fore that, after fervent deliberation, the victorious entry was this one from Julia Constance –
‘Spike goes to Cyprus. He is approached by the glamorous Irina to help get her family savings out of Cyprus after they are frozen by the bank bail-out. On the way, he discovers that the money may or may not be hot money belonging to the Russian mafia. ‘
If Spike does end up going to Cyprus, I hope Ms Constance will not end up suing me, particularly as it emerges she is a corporate lawyer. I therefore end this posting with a phrase which apparently absolves me of any lawsuits – ‘without prejudice’.
